International Women in Engineering Day 2024 - Chloé O’Neill

Early career background (university studies and your early roles before expro) –
I pursued a summer internship with Stuller, an international jewelry manufacturer, in 2021 to further my experience working with 3D modeling while in college. In May of 2022, I accepted a summer internship with Expro in the Engineering Shared Services department, working in engineering documentation. I continued my internship part-time until I graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a mechanical engineering degree in May of 2023. I accepted and began my full-time position within the same role the Monday after graduation, and as of February 2024, I have moved to PMO, working as a Project Supervisor.

What does your job involve?
My current role involves planning, executing, and overseeing projects to ensure they are completed on time, within scope, and within budget. I spend my days coordinating tasks, managing resources, communicating with team members and stakeholders, and mitigating risks to achieve the project goals. 

Whats the best piece of advice you’ve been given 
The best piece of advice I have been given was after my co-worker noticed I was nervous for a meeting, and they told me, “Just remember, everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time!” Since then, I have thought of this saying before every large meeting or anytime I have to speak in front of a crowd, and instantly I am able to feel more confident because it’s funny, but it’s true!

What challenges have your faced so far as a woman in engineering?
The challenges I have faced specifically as a woman in engineering have not really been challenges at all. I think that is part of the point – we are all equal in terms of working within engineering. I am fortunate to work in an environment where I am treated as an equal while others are not as fortunate, but that should not be considered good fortune because we are, in fact, just that – equal. Being a woman in engineering is not challenging due to being a woman; we are simply doing our jobs and are fully capable just like the next person.

What keeps you motivated?
Watching my co-workers lead and learning from them as I grow in my role is inspiring and empowering. The keep me motivated to continue to learn more and improve in every way that I can.

What do you do outside of work?
Outside of work, I run my sushi catering business, SuShe. I live-cater parties and events, making sushi for my parties right in front of them. It is a great creative outlet and keeps me very busy on Saturdays.
